A'therys Horizons Development is now Open-Source!

Open-Source?!

Yes, that's right, you heard correctly. Development for A'therys Horizons is from now open-sourced. What does this mean? I'll explain below.

 

What?

Open-source is actually quite simple to define. Every bit of software you use has program code behind it, also known as source code. The idea of open-source is that anyone is able to view the code responsible for whatever they're interacting with on screen.

 

That is what we've done as well. As of today, we have published the source code of 2 of our plugins on GitHub.

 

 

Why?

One of the issues with developing so much code for such a large project as A'therys Horizons is that it takes time. Getting help for all of this is even harder, especially since we have to build upon Sponge, a platform for server-side plugins which can be utilized with a Forge server. There just isn't that much expertise out there. And while I like to think I'm dedicating as much of my time as possible, it still doesn't seem to be enough. 

 

My hope is that by doing this, we can recruit some extra talent to help us out. No-strings-attached contributions are the way many open-source projects prosper, including the Sponge project itself. There are no more barriers to entry for helping out with A'therys development. Are you interested in helping? There's the repos, you can get to work pretty much instantly.

Essentially, you are free to use it however you like, modify it, commercialize it, whatever, but whatever you do to it, the code must be public, and it must be licensed under GNU GPLv3 as well. You should also give us a shoutout. 

 

Only 2 Plugins?

On principle, I refuse to publish code which does not work. Obviously, I haven't only developed 2 plugins thus far. There is a substantial amount of code which is not yet published.

  • AtherysQuests ( our in-house quest plugin )
  • AtherysAttributes ( a plugin for attributes )
  • AtherysCombat ( the plugin responsible for the overall combat experience on A'therys )
  • AtherysRPG ( a plugin for Skills and overall player progression ) are all still on our private GitLab repos and not published yet.
  • AtherysEconomy ( A fork of EconomyLite, modified for our own purposes )
  • AtherysConquest ( A king-of-the-hill mini-game plugin which we had at the end of Evo )

This is because they're not functional yet. Half of them don't even build. There's a lot of code in those repos, but it's not ready to be put out there yet.

 

As these plugins are made functional, they too will be published on GitHub under the same organization ( https://github.com/Atherys-Horizons )

Wow, didn't suspect this to be announced, I hope you develop a good community of contributors for this.

 

Also, are you planning on making both A'therys Combat and A'therysRPG open-sourced as well?

As soon as these plugins are in a state where I'd feel comfortable publishing them, yes.

      To honor the past versions of our amazing server and its legacy, we are returning the world of A'therys Ascended to your pleasure once more! Thanks to the tireless work of our beloved admin @Dannie, he has managed to pull my old build server from the depths of Minecraft limbo.

       V1 Calastore

      Whilst many of you use to use my build server, this will give you a chance to revisit your old builds on there. However beyond that, we have also restored the other worlds on there, including the A'therys v1 and v2 worlds. But to push the goal even further, we have also managed to bring back the A'therys Evo world. 


      v2/ Evo Vrovona (Capital)

      Unfortunately you cannot play on the world as we did once before. All of our main resources are committed to delivering A'therys Horizons. However, in the mean time, why not take a trip down memory lane? Or even better, introduce our new and upcoming friends to the world you once knew. 


      As we look beyond the Horizon, to a world we all do not know and adventures that await, we can treasure the past and the legacy of A'therys Ascended.


      v1 Qhul-Rahav

      You can connect to the server via the Conquest Reforged client OR with vanilla Minecraft 1.12.2. You can get to this server by running the command /server old. To get permissions just ask any fellow staff member, as the server is running off my original A'therys Evo build server set up with PermissionsEX. You can easily visit all of the worlds via multiverse by using /mv list and /mvtp <world name>. Any issues please contact us via the #support channel on our discord: https://discord.gg/b7HdQVN


      v1 Dorrod Muth

      We will continue to work on hard on putting together and delivering A'therys Horizons, but in the mean time we hope you enjoy this opportunity to revisit A'therys Ascended.

      So with the website returning to it's dark theme, we've made a bunch of improvements to the lorelanding!

      Added a MAP to the lorelanding!


      This map (see below for all 5 playable nations lit up) will light up a nation when you hover over it; and allow you to click into it to go to the nation's overview page!
