  • Cunning, ingenious, and long-enduring, the only mortal race in existence has overcome much in the millennia of A'therian history. Now the most common greater creatures on the mortal plane, they control the fate of at least six mighty nations. After humanity brought the Second Calling upon itself and their gods departed, they were left to fend for themselves for the first time, leaving many to wonder what the eventual fate of the race will be.

The precise circumstances leading to the creation of men is unknown, but it is generally understood that humankind leapt from the hands of Yeor. The God of Creation, first to descend to from the Cosmic Mesh and most powerful of all the gods, created the race as he shaped existence. Many were swayed to fight during the Winnowing for assorted other gods, dividing the planes into many powerful concentrations of mortality. At this time, it is said that other gods had their own creations as well, but none could be imbued with the spark of mortality that is unique to humanity. This rampant and incomplete creation was one of the many reasons for the First Calling; Llyrrh descended even as the gods prepared to shake the worlds apart, mandating that they fall to order and destroy all of their other creations.

Most scholars agree that humanity was allowed to remain because of its ties to Yeor and the distinction of being the first race to be created. It was also the most fully-formed, this again being attributed to the God of Creation. In any case, as life in A'therys, mortals fell into rank under the most powerful gods, ultimately creating the nations we know today. For the first millennium or so, there were a few independent mortal city-nations, led by powerful wizards who could keep the gods at bay. With the year 3C-721 came the destruction of the last of these city-nations at the hands of the gods, however, and all of humanity was assimilated into their differing rules.

For thousands of years, the human condition remained largely unchanged. That is, until a small band of Mortal Heroes rose up in defiance of the gods. They succeeded in a task thought impossible; the killing of a god, Golgorai-Asthas. It was this event directly that brought about the Second Calling, and the departure of the gods who had so long ruled humanity. In modern times, the mortal race has slowly adjusted to fully independent rule for the first time, falling mostly to the same systems used under their previous divine leadership. Relative balance has been finally achieved by mortal means, the decree of Llyrrh, but it is unknown how long this stability will last.
