  • Ironfen was built on an ideal location. Most of the time, it is surrounded by the ocean at its west and flooded swamps at its east; leaving the town upon an island in the midst of a brackish lake. When the tide is low, however, a narrow bridge appears, leading to the city. A well-defended gatehouse and the start of a huge wall stands at the end of this land bridge. Ironfen is considered the greatest existing example of defensible terrain in the swamps of Rammat. It is a prosperous and safe haven in the state of Stonemere.

On the other hand, the city is in a constant state of near martial law. Curfews are imposed from sundown until dawn, and citizens are often requested to grant housing to the Daggerland militia during their bi-annual rotations. Still, given the chaotic state of the swamp states, most of the people who live in the town are glad to have the additional security, even at the expense of some freedoms. The few exceptions are careful to keep their opinions to themselves, fearful that criticism may be received as the word of a Rammatite.

At the north side of town stands Ironfen Academy, which trains many of the vanguard's future soldiers. The building itself is unimpressive, dwarfed by a pair of boarding houses on either side. Inside is another matter entirely. The stuffed and mounted heads of no fewer than two hundred monsters hang on the academy's walls, including some fifty-odd serpent heads, creatures that have been slain over the years by its students. Ironfen Academy believes in the philosophy of learning by doing, and mandates that students patrol the nearby swamps in addition to their normal training. This sink or swim methodology is hard on the students, but produces fast results; allowing the tiny academy to train a large number of readied soldiers in a short period of time.
