  • Yrej is much like its neighbor Zelarath, but without most of the spite and dullness. Sparse rocky outcroppings break up the dunes, leading towards the sea-smoothed cliffs of the south. The city is built into these cliffs, much like in Gala to the northwest, carved from the multicolored rock. Though there are always a few ships in the harbor, most trade has dried up; Selukkite goods can be purchased from more friendly nationals in other cities, and the newly completed Loghec port in the Halls upriver are a much more welcoming haven. Still, the people of Yrej keep a good outlook, as they must. Life in the dunes is not easy, but at least the city has ready access to others should their livestock fail or their farms grow sallow. Unlike Zelarath, however, adventurers and historians flock to the city, ensuring that money will continue to flow even if all other fortunes leave them. The visitors seek Tamatic history, and the ruins of the walls which sift beneath the sands. Some even tell of the Scimitar of Yrej, the mighty enchanted weapon of the ancient general for whom the city is named. Naturally, locals capitalize on this myth, naming virtually everything in town after him or his lore. The forgotten mausoleum where he was interred eludes fortune-seekers to this day, but interestingly it is only the most dedicated individuals who turn away in despair. Those who adventure simply for the story often find exactly what they are looking for along the way.
